Dogs

Unfamiliar Dogs

Don’t run or ride a bicycle past a dog. Some dogs like to chase fast-moving objects.
Avoid dogs you don’t know. Even if the dog is on a leash, it’s safer to step into a driveway, off the sidewalk, or cross the street.
If you can’t avoid an unfamiliar dog and it approaches you, don’t stare. Allow the dog to sniff you. If you’re not sure the dog is friendly, stand still and avoid eye contact.
Most dogs will only sniff you, then realize you’re not a threat. Be aware that hats, sunglasses and uniforms agitate some dogs and may need to be removed or covered to avoid threatening the dog.
If the dog does attack, “feed” the dog your back pack, jacket, purse, or anything else that can come between you and the dog. Don’t try to run away as this may make matters worse.

If Bitten

Seek medical attention immediately.
Control bleeding and wash the area of the bite with soap and water.
Report the bite to your local police.
Provide authorities with an accurate description of the dog, the circumstances surrounding the bite, and the dog owner’s identity, if known.

Bears

Do not surprise a Black Bear!

Cyclists! Your speed and quietness put you at risk for sudden bear encounters. Slow down through shrubbed areas and when approaching blind corners. Make noise, be alert and always look ahead.

Hike in a group... most bears will leave the area if they are aware of your presence.
Stay on established trails and hike only in daylight.
Keep children close at hand and within sight.
Use extra caution when travelling near rushing water or into the wind. A bear may not be able to hear or smell you coming.
Stay in the open as much as possible.
